The AI Goodies Newsletter is Here! 🎉 Episode 1: GenAI Starter Kit

Welcome to our AI community! We start this journey by exploring what GenAI means for designers and folks in tech. Let's go! 🚀

Welcome to AI Goodies!

Ioana here! 👋

I’m very grateful you subscribed and super excited to take you on a journey into the world of AI.

This newsletter is designed to help you cut through the AI noise (we’re all SO overwhelmed 🙋‍♀️😅) and give you a selective stream of curated content on AI advancements, useful resources, relevant tools and overall guidance on how to adapt to this new world as a designer.

🪐 The GenAI Universe

To bring everyone on the same page, let’s define GenAI (Generative AI):

To define it, putting it simply, Generative AI is a type of Artificial Intelligence that creates new content based on what it has learned from existing content. Its main applications are in generating text, images, or other media in response to prompts.

How it works is that the model gets trained on data by applying machine learning techniques, and is then able to create something entirely new but with similar characteristics.

The main applications of Generative AI are Language Models and Image Models.

Language models learn about patterns in language through training data, then, given some text, they predict what comes next.

Some of the most prominent tools:

  • Text: Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity

  • Images: Midjourney, ChatGPT, Dall-E & other stock image tools: Freepik, Copilot AI

  • Videos: invideo.io

  • Voice: lovo.ai

Want to learn more about GenAI? Here’s a course I recommend by Google “Introduction to Generative AI Learning Path” where you will cover the following:

  • Intro to Generative AI

  • Intro to Language Models

  • Intro to Responsible AI

  • Prompt Design & many more

💫 What does GenAI mean for designers?

Af first glance, it might seem that GenAI will replace the work of designers but that couldn’t be more of a myth. We’ll unpack more about why this won’t happen in a future newsletter episode.

GenAI will serve more as a collaborator in the Design Process rather than a full replacement. Think of it as a junior designer assisting you at relevant stages. You still design and orchestrate the process.

It can be a great tool for rapid iteration, testing guidance, a research starting point and will boost productivity incredibly by eliminating the repetitive aspect in the design process.

Here are some interesting reads on the topic of AI, that sparked my curiosity recently:

💡 Want to learn more about designing with AI?

I’ve created a course with the Interaction Design Foundation to help you immerse yourself in the world of AI and learn all the essential tools to use in your UX design process. You will learn a AI tool for each stage of the design process:

  • Definition of problem statement

  • Research

  • Analysis

  • Design (UX & UI)

  • Prototyping

  • Testing

  • Iteration
